May 21, 2026. NHTSA has issued an interim final rule modifying federal requirements for seat belt reminder systems, delaying compliance dates and making several technical clarifications in response to industry petitions for reconsideration of a January 2025 final rule. The interim final rule is effective April 6, 2026. At the end of the comment period, the agency will publish a final rule responding to any comments received and making any appropriate changes to the interim final rule (NHTSA Interim final rule; request for comments, 91 Fed. Reg. 17144 (Apr. 6, 2026)).
July 2, 2026. NHTSA has issued a final rule delaying and phasing in a new compliance schedule for expanded pre-crash data capture requirements. The rule takes effect on June 17, 2026. Petitions for reconsideration of this rule must be received by July 2, 2026 (NHTSA Final rule, 91 Fed. Reg. 28432 (May 18, 2026)).
