Legislation that would direct the Department of Health and Human Services to expand rural hospitals’ access to cybersecurity resources is set for consideration next Thursday by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

The Rural Hospital Cybersecurity Enhancement Act (S 2169) was introduced last June by Sens. Josh Hawley (R., Mo.), Maggie Hassan (D., N.H.), and Mark Kelly (D., Ariz.).

The bill would require HHS to develop a comprehensive rural hospital cybersecurity workforce development strategy that includes public-private partnerships, development of curricula and training resources, and policy recommendations (CPR, June 26, 2025).

The committee’s markup is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Room 430 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
