A software error may cause the air bags to deploy with excessive force.

Mazda North American Operations has issued a recall for about 77,670 2016-2023 MX-5 Miata vehicles due to a potential air bag malfunction. The issue lies in a software error in the air bag control module, which may cause the front air bags to deploy with excessive force during a crash. This could increase the risk of injury to occupants and fails to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, Occupant Crash Protection (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 24V695, Report receipt date: Sept. 18, 2024).

The remedy for this issue involves dealers updating the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) control module software. This service will be provided free of charge to affected vehicle owners. Mazda is expected to begin mailing out owner notification letters on November 17, 2024.

For further information or to address any concerns, owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda’s number for this recall is 6924I. Additionally, owners can reach out to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
