The online game platform will adopt stricter age checks and parental control requirements.
Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford announced a legal agreement with online gaming platform Roblox that includes new safety requirements and financial commitments aimed at protecting children. Under the agreement, Roblox will pay $10 million to support initiatives encouraging children to participate in non-digital programs and to educate children and parents about platform safety. The agreement also includes what the attorney general’s office described as comprehensive injunctive relief affecting how the platform operates for minor users (Nevada Attorney General News Release (Apr. 15, 2026)).
In a statement, Ford said the agreement is intended to reduce the risk of children being targeted by predators in virtual environments. He said the measures will provide parents with more tools to manage their children’s use of the platform, establish default protections for minors, and ensure that communications involving children are not encrypted.
Age verification. As part of the agreement, Roblox will require age verification for all users to ensure that children access only age-appropriate content. The company has committed to using facial age estimation technology and government-issued identification to confirm user ages. Roblox will also employ behavioral monitoring to identify users who may have been assigned incorrect ages.
Parental controls. The agreement expands parental control options on the platform. Parents will be able to choose who their children can communicate with and what games they can play. For users without a linked parent account, Roblox will apply a default content mode designed to provide protections for minors.
Trusted friends. The agreement also limits communication features for younger users. Adult users and users under 16 will not be able to chat with others unless they are designated as “trusted friends.” For users under 13, and for some users up to age 16, adding trusted friends will require parental consent. Unless a parent chooses otherwise, users between the ages of 13 and 15 may add trusted friends through a QR code or phone contact importer.
Encryption. In addition, the agreement prohibits encryption for any communication involving minors on the platform. According to the attorney general’s office, this measure is intended to help law enforcement more effectively address child exploitation, trafficking, and the distribution of illegal or harmful content.
Other terms. Beyond the $10 million payment, Roblox has agreed to spend $1 million over two years on an online safety awareness campaign targeting both minors and adults. The company will also invest $1.5 million in a law enforcement liaison position to provide state agencies with communication channels to address safety concerns on the platform.
