According to a public opinion poll of Europeans, 75 percent of respondents judged E.U. President Ursula von der Leyen to have poorly defended European interests, while 44 percent of respondents perceived Donald Trump to be their enemy.

In this installment of Tariffs Insights, Thomas Thompson takes a closer look at the trade and tariff agreement entered by the European Union and the U.S. back in August. Under that agreement, U.S. residents will pay a 15 percent tariff on most goods imported from E.U. states, while the EU will eliminate its tariffs on U.S. industrial imports and will invest $600 billion across strategic sectors in the United States.

Additionally, Thompson considers how public opinion polling in the E.U. has found mass discontent and a strong sense of humiliation across the European populace, as well as a high level of awareness of the agreement which reflects that tariff policy with the U.S. had transcended the commercial realm to being a feature on the political plain. Thompson also provides an overview of the E.U. legislative process at play for implementing the tariff agreement.
