The Swiss Federal Council has set out options for the introduction of a new levy on electric vehicles that would be introduced from 2030.

The proposals are intended to ensure the adequate financing of Swiss road infrastructure, with mineral oil tax revenues expected to decline with the increasing use of electric vehicles.

The Federal Council, at its September 26, 2026, meeting agreed on exploring two options, either:

    • a kilometer-based charge, depending on vehicle type and total weight. The average rate would be CHF0.054 per kilometer; or

    • A new tax on electricity charging stations, based on consumption, at rate of CHF0.228 per kWh, applied regardless of vehicle type.

The change will require an amendment to the Federal Constitution, which will require a referendum.

The Federal Council has launched a consultation on the proposals, which will last until January 9, 2026.
