Over 29 million vehicles were recalled last year.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reminding motorists to check for open safety recalls as Americans prepare to change their clocks this weekend. The agency issued the alert in connection with Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, which runs through March 8, 2026, emphasizing the need for timely recall repairs (NHTSA Press Release (Mar. 3, 2026)).
Last year, automakers and equipment manufacturers issued 997 recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles. NHTSA reported additional recalls involving over 1.1 million pieces of vehicle equipment, nearly 745,000 car seats, and more than 145,000 tires. The agency urged consumers to verify whether their vehicles or equipment are subject to open recalls and to schedule repairs as soon as possible.
NHTSA noted that recall repairs are free when performed at a vehicle manufacturer’s authorized dealership. Owners with an open recall should contact their local dealership immediately to arrange service and follow any associated manufacturer instructions, including “do not drive” or “park outside” warnings if applicable.
How to check for recalls. Consumers can check for recalls using NHTSA’s online lookup tool by entering the vehicle identification number, license plate number, or equipment details. The agency also highlighted its SaferCar app, which automatically notifies users of new recalls. For recalled car seats, tires, or other equipment, NHTSA advises contacting the retailer that sold the item.
Reporting a safety problem. Individuals who believe their vehicle may contain an unaddressed safety defect can file a report online or call NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888 327 4236.
