Dealers will replace engines in the affected vehicles if damage to the connecting rod bearings is found.
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling about 10,731 2017-2018 Optima Hybrid and Optima Plug-In Hybrid vehicles because the connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage. Such a damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 21V844, Report receipt date: October 29, 2021).
Remedy. Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Also, dealers will install a software update containing a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 29, 2021.
Contact information. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC218. Owners also may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
