May 1, 2026. NHTSA has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to amend a portion of FMVSS No. 110, which governs tire selection, rims, and load carrying capacity information for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less. The proposed amendment addresses how tire related placards should be affixed on vehicles equipped with Automated Driving Systems (ADS) that do not have manually operated driving controls and therefore lack a traditional “driver’s side” (NHTSA Notice of proposed rulemaking, 91 Fed. Reg. 16172 (Apr. 1, 2026)).
May 21, 2026. NHTSA has issued an interim final rule modifying federal requirements for seat belt reminder systems, delaying compliance dates and making several technical clarifications in response to industry petitions for reconsideration of a January 2025 final rule. The interim final rule is effective April 6, 2026. At the end of the comment period, the agency will publish a final rule responding to any comments received and making any appropriate changes to the interim final rule (NHTSA Interim final rule; request for comments, 91 Fed. Reg. 17144 (Apr. 6, 2026)).
