The firm is aware of three consumers who suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye by the container’s stopper.
Thermos has recalled about 8.2 million Stainless King food jars and Sportsman food and beverage bottles because the stoppers can forcefully eject when opened, posing serious impact injury and laceration hazards. The hazard occurs when perishable food or beverages are stored in the containers for an extended period of time. Pressure can build inside the container, causing the stopper to eject upon opening. The recall includes approximately 5.8 million Stainless King 3000 and 3020 Food Jars and about 2.3 million Sportsman 3010 Food & Beverage Bottles (CPSC Recall Notice, No. 26-444 (Apr. 30, 2026)).
Incidents and injuries. Thermos reported 27 incidents in which consumers were struck by an ejected stopper, including injuries requiring medical attention. Three consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye.
Product description. The recall covers Thermos Stainless King food jars with model numbers SK3000 and SK3020 manufactured before July 2023, as well as all Thermos Sportsman food and beverage bottles with model number SK3010. The recalled products lack a pressure relief feature in the center of the stopper. The containers were sold in multiple colors and sizes, including 16-ounce, 24-ounce, and 40-ounce models, and have the Thermos trademark on the side and the model number printed on the bottom.
The products were sold at Target, Walmart, and other stores nationwide, as well as online through Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Thermos websites, between approximately March 2008 and July 2024. They retailed for about $30. Thermos L.L.C., based in Schaumburg, Illinois, is the importer. The recalled items were manufactured in China and Malaysia.
Remedy. Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled products immediately. For the Stainless King food jars, Thermos is offering a free replacement pressure relief stopper. Consumers will be instructed to discard the original stopper and submit a photo of it to the company. For the Sportsman bottles, consumers will be asked to return the recalled bottle using a prepaid shipping label to receive a replacement.
