FCC Commissioners are scheduled to vote at their June 25 meeting on a report and order in PS dockets 25-224 and 22-329 that aims “to preserve the public’s trust” in the emergency alert system (EAS) by requiring “targeted cybersecurity improvements that will help protect against hijacking by cybercriminals and our nation’s adversaries,” the FCC said in a fact sheet.

An accompanying FNPRM in PS dockets 25-224, 15-94, and 15-91 would seek to “[i]mprove EAS’s integrity by proposing to require the authentication of all alerts before they are transmitted” and “[b]olster the reliability of emergency alerts by proposing to establish a universal alert identification number to improve the detection and blocking of duplicate alerts and ensure that WEAs are consistently sent to members of the public who newly enter an alert’s delivery area until the emergency ends,” the fact sheet says.

The June 25 meeting is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the FCC’s Northeast Washington headquarters.
