Organizations Mentioned:Massachusetts Institute of Technology | Northwestern University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Nancy Rose will be the next deputy assistant attorney general for economic analysis at the Department of Justice Antitrust Division. Rose will take a leave of absence from MIT to lead roughly 50 economists in conducting research for the Antitrust Division and establishing policy priorities. She will replace Aviv Nevo who is returning to Northwestern University after serving in the post since April 2013.
Rose is the Charles P. Kindleberger Professor of Applied Economics and the Director of the National Bureau of Economic Research program in Industrial Organization at MIT. She focuses her research on the empirical analysis of firm behavior in imperfectly competitive industries and the economics of regulation. Rose received her undergraduate degree from Harvard, and her PhD in economics from MIT. She has been on MIT’s faculty of the Department of Economics for 20 years.
“I became an economist because I was very interested in public policies at the intersection of competition policy and regulation,” Rose stated. “This is an exciting opportunity to pivot from research to a direct role in applying economics to guide public policy that promotes a competitive and open marketplace.”
“My teaching increasingly has used antitrust cases to illustrate both competitive strategy and policy issues,” Rose said. “I’ve enjoyed using Department of Justice actions to tee up discussions of current issues in competition policy. It’s exciting to now have the chance to be a part of that process.”
