Several additional governmental entities “that the President has determined are unnecessary” are being eliminated or substantially curtailed as part of a new executive order, which gives only seven days for “full compliance.”

At the end of last week, in spite of deep and growing concerns about the U.S. economy, the White House announced yet another group of governmental entities it intends to shutter or curtail and, therefore, another long list of federal employees who will now be unemployed. The list of entities includes the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS); United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM); Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in the Smithsonian Institution (the Wilson Center); Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS); United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH); Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund); and Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA).

FMCS is an independent agency that provided mediation and other conflict resolution services. USAGM is an independent federal agency overseeing public service media networks that provide unbiased news and information in countries where the press is restricted. The Wilson Center is a non-partisan think-tank that conducted and promoted objective research to inform public policy and debate. The IMLS is a grant-making organization that also conducted and developed policy and helped libraries and museums. USICH works in partnership with government at all levels, as well as with the private sector, to reduce and end homelessness in the United States. The CDFI Fund plays a role in generating economic growth and opportunities in the country’s most economically distressed communities. MBDA promotes the growth of minority owned and operated businesses.
