The Virginia state House voted unanimously this week to pass a bill that would amend the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act to ban the sale of consumers’ precise geolocation data.
SB 338 would further strengthen consumer privacy protections by explicitly restricting the commercial use of sensitive location information.
The bill is supported by Consumer Reports and a coalition of privacy and consumer groups, which said the bill would provide “straightforward, powerful, and critically important protections for the privacy, autonomy, and physical safety of Virginians while still giving advertisers plenty of leeway to advertise.”
The bill (S.B. 338, Reg Sess.) is sponsored by Sen. Russet Perry (D.).
