Cybersecurity Policy Report, Registration Failure Leads to Data Broker Fine in California, (Jul 30, 2025)

The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) has fined a Washington-based data broker $55,400 in its latest sanction resulting from its investigative sweep of broker registration compliance.
The CPPA announced yesterday that it imposed the fine against Accurate Append, Inc., for its failure to register by the Jan. 1, 2024, deadline for its activities in 2023 as required under the DELETE Act. The broker registered with the CPPA only after the Enforcement Division contacted it during the investigative sweep.
“This settlement shows, once again, the peril faced by data brokers who fail to register,” said Michael Macko, the CPPA's head of enforcement. “We are committed to bringing transparency to the data broker industry, and vigorous enforcement of California's registration requirement is one way to do that.”
In addition to the fine, Accurate Append agreed to injunctive terms, including the payment of the Enforcement Division’s attorney fees and costs.
