Cybersecurity Policy Report, CISA Nominee Plankey Wins Senate Committee’s Approval, (Jul 30, 2025)

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee today voted 9-6 to advance the nomination of Sean Plankey to lead the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
A Senate vote on Mr. Plankey remains blocked by a “hold” placed by Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.). The Senate could vote to override Sen. Wyden’s hold, or he might lift it himself now that it appears his demand—that CISA release a report on telecommunications “insecurity”—will eventually be met.
Yesterday CISA said it planned to release the report after receiving “proper clearance” (CPR, July 29).
Mr. Plankey was director–cyber policy on the White House National Security Council in the first Trump administration and later was director of the Energy Department’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response. He currently is an adviser to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Coast Guard issues.
At his confirmation hearing, Mr. Plankey told the Senate committee that he aimed “to restore CISA to its congressional authorities and focus on the missions that you—this body—tasked it with, which is securing the federal executive branch and then securing the critical infrastructure of the United States” (CPR, July 24).
