    By John W. Arden, J.D., LL.M.

LinkedIn’s system for navigating through a list of user-specified web pages infringes a patented system owned by Web Navigation Technologies, according to a complaint filed in the federal district court in Wilmington, Delaware (Web Navigation Technologies, LLC v. LinkedIn Corporation, filed July 10, 2013).

The professional social networking website was alleged to own, operate, and do business as Pulse Systems, a Delaware corporation with its principal place of business in Palo Alto, California. The Pulse System for “navigating through a list of user specified web pages with a browser that allows a user to sequentially move through such web pages” allegedly infringes United States Patent No. 6,993,531 (“the '531 patent”), entitled “System and Method of Routine Navigation,” owned by Web Navigation Technologies, LLC.

“Because this system for navigating through a list of user specified web pages is an essential part of the functionality of the Pulse Systems, the Pulse System does not have any substantial uses that do not infringe the '531 patent,” the lawsuit claimed.

Web Navigation Technologies charges that LinkedIn and Alphonso Labs Inc. (d/b/a, Pulse) directly infringed the '531 patent by making, using, and selling a computer-implemented website (www.pulse.me) and indirectly infringed the '531 patent by inducing others to visit the website and to use the Pulse System.

The action requests the entry of a judgment that defendants have infringed the patent-in-suit and seeks damages, pre-judgment and post-judgment interest, attorney fees, and costs of suit.

The case is Civil Action No. 1:13-cv-01204-UNA.

Attorneys: Richard D. Kirk (Bayard, P.A.) for Web Navigation Technologies, LLC.

Companies: Web Navigation Technologies, LLC; LinkedIn Corporation; Alphonso Labs Inc.
