Waymo LLC has recalled about 3,067 5th Generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS) operating a software version prior to the November 5, 2025, release. The software may cause the vehicle to pass a stopped school bus even when the red lights are flashing and/or stop arm is extended. Passing a stopped school bus increases the risk of a crash with a pedestrian, NHTSA cautions (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 25E084, Report receipt date: Dec. 8, 2025).
Investigation. NHTSA had opened an investigation into Waymo autonomous vehicles (AVs) in October 2025 after a media report showed an AV maneuvering around a stopped school bus in Atlanta, Georgia. The bus had its red lights flashing, stop arm deployed, and crossing control arm extended. No injuries or crashes were reported in connection with the incident.
Remedy. Waymo has updated the ADS software, free of charge. All affected vehicles were repaired by November 17, 2025.
