Consumers should also follow age guidelines and other safety information on toy packaging.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is reminding consumers to prioritize safety when shopping for gifts and decorations this holiday season. The agency warns that unsafe or counterfeit products, often sold through unverified third-party sites and originating from foreign countries, can pose serious hazards, including injuries and fatalities (CPSC News Release, No. 26-137 (Dec. 9, 2025)).

Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman emphasized the importance of vigilance. “American families can keep their celebrations joyful and safe by shopping at trusted retailers, staying current on recalls and using holiday decorations properly,” Feldman said. He cautioned shoppers to avoid dangerous products that may not meet U.S. safety standards.

CPSC advises consumers to follow key safety tips when purchasing gifts. Shoppers should buy toys only from reputable stores and online retailers, be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, and check for recalls at CPSC.gov/recalls before purchasing secondhand items. Parents and caregivers are urged to follow age guidelines on toy packaging, provide safety gear for riding toys, and keep small parts and deflated balloons away from young children to prevent choking hazards.

Holiday decorating. The agency also issued guidance for safe holiday decorating. Recommendations include watering live Christmas trees, selecting artificial trees labeled “fire resistant,” and never leaving candles unattended. CPSC advises using flameless candles when possible and avoiding overloading electrical outlets or connecting more than three sets of incandescent lights.

Additional resources. Consumers can visit the Commission’s Holiday Safety Information Center for more holiday safety tips.
