February 4, 2026. NHTSA has extended the comment period for a proposed rule to reset the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for model years 2022-2031. The comment period was originally scheduled to end on January 20, 2026, but was extended by 15 days to February 4, 2026 (NHTSA Proposed rule; extension of comment period, 91 Fed. Reg. 1494 (Jan. 14, 2026)).

February 23, 2026. NHTSA is seeking comment on a proposed Global Technical Regulation (GTR) for Automated Driving Systems (ADS). The draft regulation was developed by the United Nations Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles, known as GRVA, which operates under the World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (NHTSA Notice and request for comments, 91 Fed. Reg. 2994 (Jan. 23, 2026)).

March 2, 2026. NHTSA has issued a final rule amending FMVSS No. 217a, which governs anti-ejection glazing for bus portals. The rule partially grants a petition for reconsideration of the original October 2024 regulation. The rule took effect on January 15, 2026. Petitions for reconsideration must be received by March 2, 2026 (NHTSA Final rule; partial grant of a petition for reconsideration, 91 Fed. Reg. 1709 (Jan. 15, 2026)).

March 24, 2026. NHTSA is seeking input on safety standards and related regulations that may no longer serve a functional safety purpose. The agency asks commenters to identify obsolete or unnecessarily prescriptive requirements that continue to impose costs, restrict design flexibility, or hinder the development of new automotive technologies (NHTSA Request for comments, 91 Fed. Reg. 2992 (Jan. 23, 2026)).
