The Massachusetts state Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure meets Oct. 1 to consider a bill that would allow businesses to sign up for the “do-not call” list.

HB 322 proposes to modify the definition of “consumer” to include associations, corporations, partnerships, limited partnerships, limited liability companies, or other entities operating in Massachusetts that subscribe to telephone services.

The bill also removes the word “residential” from several sections of state statute related to telemarketing, thereby “broadening the scope to include business telephone services.” These changes aim to extend telemarketing protections to businesses, aligning with consumer protection efforts by reducing unwanted telemarketing calls to business entities, according to the bill.

The bill (H.B. 322, Reg Sess.) is sponsored by Rep. Bruce Ayers (D.).
