“The Department of Labor is illegally withholding funds that support senior citizens who are simply trying to make a living, gain skills essential to navigating the modern workforce, and serve their communities,” said Lynn Eisenberg of Jacobson Lawyers Group.
A putative class action filed last week against the Trump administration stemming from alleged unlawful withholding of funds from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) seeks to restore more than $300 million in grants to nationwide nonprofit organizations. Four plaintiffs, who have all directly benefited from the SCSEP, seek to represent the tens of thousands of similar situated seniors who they allege will suffer harm if the funds are not released. They are represented by Democracy Forward and the Jacobsen Lawyers Group.
Democracy Forward explains in its release announcing the suit that SCSEP was created by Congress in 1965 to provide grants to nonprofit organizations to help train and offer community-service oriented job experiences for unemployed older Americans who seek to transition back into the workforce. Though the Department of Labor has executed the program for 60 years and Congress has provided ample funding for it, they note, the current administration has inexplicably withheld funding to nonprofit organizations, which administer the vast majority of SCSEP efforts across the nation.
“The Department of Labor is illegally withholding funds that support senior citizens who are simply trying to make a living, gain skills essential to navigating the modern workforce, and serve their communities,” said Lynn Eisenberg of Jacobson Lawyers Group.
