Organizations Mentioned:Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP
Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP has established a new data breach practice group in Sarasota, Florida. The practice, which will be staffed by a seven-member team, was created in response to the Florida Information Protection Act of 2014, which requires that all companies take reasonable measures to protect personal data.
The Data Breach practice group will assist clients in all aspects of data breach law—from prevention, to breach, litigation, and resolution. Specifically, the practice group can assist clients in assessing reasonable measures required to protect and secure personal information; identifying and containing potential breaches; assessing legal risk and advising on strategic risk mitigation; establishing breach response plans, including the coordination of any required notification to the Attorney General, affected individuals, and credit agencies; and representing clients through investigation, enforcement, and subsequent litigation directed at individuals who compromised personal information.
“Any business that stores individuals’ personal information needs to take immediate steps to create a data breach plan that complies with the new Florida law and which contemplates prevention, containment and resolution,” stated Shumaker partner, Michael S. Taaffe. “The risk of a data breach increases daily and the result can cripple a business that is not prepared.”
The seven-member Data Breach practice group includes attorneys Michael D. Bressan, Douglas A. Cherry, Scott A. La Porta, Jarrod J. Malone, Ryan S. Nichols, Michael S. Taaffe, and David L. Wyant, Jr.
Shumaker is a full service business law firm with more than 240 attorneys in offices in Charlotte, Columbus, Sarasota, Tampa, and Toledo. The firm’s clients range from individuals and small businesses to health care providers, nonprofits, Fortune 500 and international corporations.
