Former Network Advertising Initiative Deputy General Counsel and compliance program director Meredith Halama has joined Perkins Coie as a senior counsel in its Privacy & Security practice, the law firm has announced.

At the NAI, an industry self-regulatory association composed of ad technology companies engaged in interest-based advertising and related practices, Halama oversaw the compliance of nearly 100 companies with NAI’s self-regulatory code of conduct, which governs the collection and use of data for online advertising purposes. She conducted annual compliance reviews, initiated investigations and sanctions proceedings, and drafted annual compliance reports.

As head of a working group of NAI member companies, Halama helped develop, draft, and publish for public comment an updated NAI Code of Conduct. She also assisted with the development of numerous other NAI implementation guidelines, including policies governing the collection and use of data from mobile applications, notice at the point of data collection, and the collection and use of health-related data for advertising purposes. She also advised NAI member companies on how to respond to browser-based do-not-track headers. She has advised clients on their obligations under COPPA, CPNI, GLBA, HIPAA, FCRA and other privacy and security laws; has assisted clients with data flow mapping and security breach responses; and has conducted training sessions to educate employees on protecting personal information.

At Perkins Coie, Halama expects to focus her practice on privacy and security issues, in particular the collection and use of data for advertising purposes. In private practice prior to joining the NAI, she counseled a wide range of clients on issues relating to privacy, technology, and information security law and represented clients before the Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission, and other agencies. She also served as counsel in the Communications and E-Commerce Department of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.

“Meredith is an outstanding addition to our privacy practice,” said Al Gidari, a senior partner in Perkins Coie’s Privacy & Security practice. “Many of our largest clients are on the leading edge of interest-based advertising, so Meredith’s experience at NAI will be of enormous value to them as they continue to develop and implement innovative marketing strategies.”

Halama received her J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1999, and a B.A. in History from Northwestern University in 1995. She clerked for Judge James F. Holderman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Perkins Coie is an international law firm with over 900 attorneys located in offices in Anchorage, Bellevue, Boise, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Madison, New York, Palo Alto, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Beijing, Shanghai, and Taipei.
