Cybersecurity Policy Report, FTC Plans Public Session on Proposed COPPA Rule Changes, (Jan 12, 2024)
By Lynn Stanton
At its Jan. 18 meeting, the Federal Trade Commission will hear a presentation by the Division of Privacy and Identity Protection on proposed changes to the agency’s COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) rule.
The FTC adopted the notice of proposed rulemaking in late December (CPR, Jan. 2) with proposals to require a separate opt-in authorization for targeted advertising, require operators to provide more information about how they use collected data for internal operations, limit the use of contact information and persistent identifiers to send push notifications to children to “nudge” them to use a service, and strengthen data security and data retention requirements.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET. At the start of the meeting, members of the public who sign up beforehand will have an opportunity “to share feedback on the Commission’s work generally and bring relevant matters to the Commission’s attention.”
