Cybersecurity Policy Report, European Commission Seeks Input for Report on GDPR, (Jan 12, 2024)
The European Commission (EC) is seeking public input for an evaluation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which requires the commission to review the GDPR every four years and submit a report to EU lawmakers.
The GDPR “is the main piece of EU legislation guaranteeing the fundamental right to data protection” and sets forth the “rights of individuals and imposes obligations on organizations and businesses that process the personal data of people in the EU,” according to an EC news release.
The call for evidence explains that article 97 of the GDPR stipulates that the EC’s report should “cover the international transfer of personal data to third countries and the cooperation and consistency mechanism between national data protection authorities.” All stakeholders, including civil society, businesses, and GDPR practitioners, are invited to submit their views on all aspects of the application of the GDPR, it said.
Comments collected through the call for evidence “will complement the input gathered from the GDPR Multi-Stakeholder Group set up by the Commission,” the EC said. In addition, the report will take into account the views of EU lawmakers, the European Data Protection Board, and other entities.
Feedback may be submitted until Feb. 8 via a dedicated portal. The commission plans to adopt the report in the second quarter of 2024.
