Cybersecurity Policy Report, Finnish Carrier Ordered to Give Personal Data to Subscriber, (Oct 2, 2024)
The Finnish Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman (DPO) has held that the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires cellphone operators to give subscribers access to their subscription data.
The determination followed an investigation of an unnamed mobile phone operator that refused to transmit the personal information of a subscriber who requested his data, the DPO said in a news release today.
The subscriber sought access to all information related to the use of his mobile phone subscription, including start and end times of calls, call recipients, local information, forwarding information, and other technical information, according to the DPO.
He requested specifically to receive the information electronically. The mobile phone operator only provided the subscriber with some of the information, mainly in paper form by mail. The DPO found the phone operator acted in violation of the GDPR when it failed to transmit the information electronically as the consumer requested.
