The FTC and law enforcement agencies in Saskatchewan, Canada have renewed their joint enforcement initiative regarding the enforcement of cross-border deceptive marketing practices, the agency announced today. The Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of a Joint Enforcement Initiative Regarding Enforcement of Deceptive Marketing Practices Laws (MOU) has been renewed through December 31, 2018.

According to the Commission, an agreement was originally reached between the FTC and its Canadian counterparts in 1995 to fight fraud and deceptive marketing. The agencies have since been able to provide important investigational assistance to each other, including information sharing, intelligence gathering, cooperation on parallel files, and training. The MOU was initially signed in June 2010 and was renewed in 2011 through December 31, 2013. Under the MOU, the agencies agreed to use their “best efforts to cooperate” in cross-border deceptive marketing practices investigations between Saskatchewan and the U.S.

The partnership created under the MOU includes the FTC and the Competition Bureau of Canada, as well as the Canada Post, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice, the Saskatoon and Regina Police Services, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The Commission approved the MOU by a vote of 5-0.
