Brazil's Federal Revenue has welcomed rapid progress towards the implementation of a new standardized electronic invoicing standard for invoices issued for services transactions, Nota Fiscal de Servicos Eletronica (NFS-e).

Invoices must adhere to the national NFS-e standard starting 2026.

Currently, each municipality has its own rules regarding the format of electronic invoices for services. As part of preparations for the implementation of Brazil's new value-added tax regimes, these requirements are being harmonized, to reduce compliance costs for businesses and improve opportunities for oversight and cooperation between municipalities.

In a new update, the Federal Revenue has said municipalities home to 80 percent of taxpayers have made the preparations necessary to enforce the national standard from 2026. This marks a significant increase on figures from early August, where just a quarter of municipalities had agreed to implement the standard and under a quarter of those had implemented it.

The Federal Revenue has released a new dashboard where stakeholders can track adoption nationwide.
