Austria's Finance Ministry has advised that taxpayers will be required to use two-factor authentication to access the FinanzOnline portal from October 1, 2025.

Taxpayers will either be able to use their digital "ID Austria" to access the service, or will be required to enter a one-time code after entering their username and password.

Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer said: "FinanzOnline has been an international model for years. At the same time, however, it remains possible to contact the tax office offline and handle tax matters using the appropriate forms, so as not to exclude anyone. To ensure that we remain one of the most modern and secure tax administrations in the world, we are now implementing mandatory two-factor authentication at FinanzOnline, as is already familiar from many sectors, such as banking."

State Secretary of Finance Barbara Eibinger-Miedl added: "Starting in October, we will be increasing the security of FinanzOnline by requiring two-factor authentication – as is already the case with online banking. ID Austria is the easiest and fastest way to log in to FinanzOnline, but of course, another two-factor authentication app can also be used. At the same time, it will of course still be possible to submit forms directly to the tax office, ensuring that no one is left behind."
