Organizations Mentioned:Chesapeake Energy Corp. | U.S. Department of Justice
The U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division on March 3 moved to dismiss an indictment against Aubrey K. McClendon, former Chesapeake Energy Corp. CEO, for allegedly rigging bids on oil and gas leases (U.S. v. McClendon, Case No. 5:16-cr-00043-M).
On March 1, a federal grand jury in Oklahoma City returned a one-count indictment against McClendon for conspiring with the head of a competing oil and gas exploration and production company to rig bids on the purchase of oil and natural gas leases and "producing properties" in northwest Oklahoma. The following day, the 56-year-old McClendon, founder and CEO of American Energy Partners, was killed in a one-car accident in Oklahoma City.
According to the motion, dismissal of the action “would best meet the ends of justice in that the defendant is now deceased.”
The case is No. 16-cr-00043-M.
