Antitrust Law Daily Wrap Up, ANTITRUST NEWS: EC Confirms Raids of Companies in European Sugar Industry, (May 15, 2013)
By Tobias J. Gillett, J.D., LL.M.
The European Commission officially announced today that it conducted unannounced inspections on April 23, 2013 of the premises of companies in the sugar industry in several Member States. The EC asserts that it "has reason to believe" the companies may have violated EU antitrust rules prohibiting cartels and restrictive business practices in connection with the supply of white sugar.
The EC carried out the inspections in coordination with the competition authorities in the Member countries. Such inspections represent the initial step in an EC probe of suspected anticompetitive practices.
Joaquin Almunia, Vice President of the EC Commission for Competition Policy, referred to the sugar industry inspections in a speech given yesterday to the ECR Europe Annual Conference in Brussels.
"As to the role of competition policy, let me repeat that we will continue to watch food and consumer-goods markets closely," Almunia stated. "In the current conditions, keeping these markets free from illegal and harmful anti-competitive practices is a litmus test for us."
