Canada’s Competition Bureau hosted a one-day workshop on innovation and antitrust today. Held at the Ottawa Convention Centre, the event was kicked off by the Commissioner of Competition, John Pecman, who delivered the opening remarks. The Commissioner highlighted the importance of innovation for businesses, the government and competition agencies.

During the course of the day, various speakers from business, academia and government, both domestic and international, discussed the role of innovation across various industries, explored the relationship between competition and innovation, and examined how innovation should best be assessed by competition agencies.

More specifically, the workshop featured three panel discussions on the factors that drive Canadian businesses to innovate, the relationship between competition and innovation, and the current treatment of innovation in competition law analysis in Canada and other key jurisdictions The purpose of the workshop was to advance the thinking regarding how innovation and dynamic competition should be assessed by competition agencies in order to better inform antitrust analyses, particularly in innovative industries.
