OPM claims this “unprecedented cross-government coordination will ensure the federal government possesses the best talent to modernize and strengthen its technology systems.”
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), in coordination with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the General Services Administration (GSA), the White House Office of Science Technology and Policy (OSTP), and others, has announced the establishment of the United States Tech Force (Tech Force), which it describes as a cross-government program for recruiting “top technologists to modernize the federal government.”
Tech Force is a “critical aspect of” the President’s directive regarding artificial intelligence (AI), according to OPM’s announcement, and is a government-wide effort. It will feature collaboration with “leading private-sector technology companies” and participants will “receive technical training and work closely with senior managers sourced directly from industry.” OPM claims this “unprecedented cross-government coordination will ensure the federal government possesses the best talent to modernize and strengthen its technology systems.”
Roll-out explained. OPM sent a memo to agency leaders explaining the U.S. Tech Force Program and its purposes, with further details regarding how the program will be rolled out. It explains that the Tech Force will consist of annual cohorts of 1,000 Fellows who will be hired into and funded by agencies. While OPM and the certain officials “will provide centralized oversight and administration,” the memo notes, “U.S. Tech Force fellows will be hired by and onboarded directly into each agency, with teams of about 30-40 individuals at most large agencies.”
Corporate partners. Initial private sector partners identified by OPM for Tech Force include Adobe, Amazon Web Services, AMD, Anduril, Apple, Box, C3.ai, Coinbase, Databricks, Dell Technologies, Docusign, Google Public Sector, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Oracle, Palantir, Robinhood, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, Snowflake, Synopsys, Uber, Workday, xAI, and Zoom. Tech Force will also partner with NobleReach Foundation to recruit technologists and provide program support.
According to the memo, OPM will initiate the first pilot wave of the program by Spring 2026 with the first on-cycle cohort by September 2026.
