ANTITRUST NEWS: Dr. Paul Johnson has been appointed to the position of T. D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics, the Canada Competition Bureau has announced. As the “chief economist,” he will provide economic expertise and leadership to Bureau investigations, policies, and emerging issues over the two-year term of his appointment. Dr. Johnson, who is returning home to Canada from Washington D.C. where he is a partner at Bates White Economic Consulting, joins the Bureau via the Government of Canada’s Interchange Program. He has expertise in applied econometrics, as well as experience working on civil antitrust litigation and high profile mergers before U.S. and European antitrust agencies over a wide range of industries.

ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS NEWS: The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has cleared the proposed acquisition of Syngenta by the China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina), according to an announcement by Syngenta. Syngenta is a leading agricultural company helping to improve global food security by enabling millions of farmers to make better use of available resources. ChemChina, which is the largest chemical corporation in China and is 234 on the Fortune 500 list, has previously successfully acquired nine leading industrial companies in France, the United Kingdom, Israel, Italy, Germany, and other countries. In addition to CFIUS clearance, the closing of the transaction is subject to antitrust review by numerous regulators around the world and other customary closing conditions.
