ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS NEWS. The European Commission (EC) has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of Qlik Technologies by Thoma Bravo, both of the United States, the agency announced today. Qlik is a provider of business intelligence and analytics software. Thoma Bravo is a private equity firm with a focus on application and infrastructure software and technology-enabled services. The EC concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns because there are only minimal overlaps between Qlik’s activities and the activities of Thoma Bravo’s portfolio companies.
CONSUMER PROTECTION NEWS. The FTC is mailing out 5,970 refund checks totaling more than $4 million to people who received illegal robocalls and were tricked into paying thousands of dollars for allegedly bogus "extended warranties." In June of 2010, an FTC complaint alleged that Dolce Group Worldwide, LLC and its owner Fereidoun "Fred" Khalilian (collectively, "defendants"), d/b/a My Car Solutions, conned people into purchasing bogus extended auto warranties by representing that they were affiliated with auto dealers and manufacturers. A final court order banned the defendants from telemarketing or helping others to telemarket, prohibited them from making any misrepresentations or omissions when selling any goods or services, and imposed a monetary judgment of $4,255,209. Refund checks, which will begin being mailed today, must be cashed within 60 days or will become void.
