The Dutch data protection authority, Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP), said yesterday that it had warned more than 200 websites about the legality of their cookie banners, leading three-quarters of the warned organizations to update the banners to comply with data protection requirements.

AP said in a press release that, since April, it had been monitoring whether websites in the Netherlands were properly requesting consent for tracking cookies. The agency said it was continuing to monitor websites and would take enforcement actions against organizations that remained noncompliant.

"Our warnings help organizations improve their cookie banners,” AP Vice Chair Monique Verdier said. “However, if they fail to change their behavior even after receiving a warning, they can expect an investigation or a fine.”
