Garante, the Italian data protection authority, has warned users of the perils of using artificial intelligence to interpret medical information downloaded to generative AI platforms.

Garate said in a news release that the practice of downloading clinical analyses, X-rays, and other medical reports to generative AI platforms for diagnostic purposes was on the rise, creating a variety of risks, including loss of control over health data, as well as the risk that AI outputs might be inaccurate.

In its warning, Garante asks users of these AI platforms to carefully evaluate the sharing of health data with providers of generative AI services and the accuracy of information generated by AI, adding that any such output should always be verified by a medical professional.

In particular, Garante recommended that users review privacy notices provided by generative AI services to verify whether health data fed into an AI system would be deleted or whether the data would be used for algorithmic training. Garante emphasized the importance of ensuring qualified human intermediation in the processing of health data through AI systems. Finally, the agency reminded developers of AI systems and health care professionals of the risks involved in the massive collection of personal data for the purpose of training generative AI models, reiterating earlier guidance it provided on web-scraping (CPR, May 31, 2024).
