The deal with Japan includes a commitment to invest $550 billion in the U.S. as well as opening Japanese automobile markets to U.S. car, truck, and automotive component makers.
With deadlines rapidly approaching, agreements struck with U.S. Asian trading partners dominated the tariff news this past week, with an accord with Japan leading the way. President Trump hailed that arrangement as “a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made.” That agreement, along with a newly announced tariff deal with the Philippines, and new reported details around the last week’s deal with Indonesia, buoyed global financial markets. In this Vital Briefing, Thomas Thompson explores the following:
Details surrounding the newly minted U.S.–Japan Strategic Trade and Investment Agreement, including the rates to be paid by U.S. importers, as well Japanese commitments to buy more U.S. produced rice and other agricultural products.
Japan’s commitments to remove the non-tariff barriers for U.S. automakers, as well as its agreement to purchase scores of Boeing aircraft as well additional billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment.
The trade deal reached with the Philippines, which includes zero tariffs on U.S. goods exported to the Philippines, and a 19% tariff rate on goods imported into the United States.
Indonesia’s agreement to eliminate tariff barriers on over 99% of U.S. products it imports as well as nine measures it has agreed to implement which will further reduce trade barriers for U.S. companies looking to sell into Indonesian markets.
