Japan is moving forward on last year’s trade commitment to invest $550 billion in the U.S.

President Donald Trump attributed $36 billion in investments by Japan in U.S. infrastructure projects to a tariff-reducing trade agreement announced last July, stating that the projects “could not be done without one very special word, TARIFFS.”

The Japan deal resembled many in requiring significant investments in the U.S. in exchange for tariff reductions. But several countries including India, Brazil, and China have so far survived the U.S.’s tariff policy onslaught with lesser concessions.

In this edition of Tariffs Insights, Thomas Thompson discusses varying approaches to tariff-reducing deals and how these can be seen as an example for Europe.
