While Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell recently testified before Congress that price inflation has receded from its 2022 levels, he also observed that near-term measures of inflationary expectations are rising. Uncertainty abounds for the world economy as President Trump’s self-imposed July 9th deadline to strike comprehensive tariff deals with scores of U.S. trading partners around the globe draws ever closer. Aside from one trade agreement that was struck with the UK, the Trump administration has kept it cards close to the vest with very little being said about the status of trade discussions between the United States and the rest of the world. In this Vital Briefing, Thomas Thompson explores how the uncertainty surrounding the U.S. tariff policy is playing out from a number of perspectives. Some of the topics Thompson discusses in the briefing include:

    • Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s approach to monetary policy and dealing with the prospect of building inflationary pressures as he looks to gain further insights on how tariffs are impacting the future course of the economy.

    • Challenges faced by the Japanese central bank as it seeks to determine how U.S. tariffs may affect its interest rate plans as it strives to confront persistent and unwelcome inflationary pressures.

    • A review of the U.S.–UK trade agreement, and how the details of that arrangement might serve as a guidepost to future deals that the United States might be willing to consider with other trading partners.

    • How trade tensions with China have already dramatically reduced that country’s imports of a wide range of U.S. agricultural products. Additionally, the substantial declines in Chinese exports to the United States are examined, as well as potential lessons gleaned from the first Trump administration’s trade disputes with China.
