A new partnership between the United Kingdom’s AI Security Institute and the Australian AI Safety Institute will bring deeper ties between the two in an effort to address AI security and safety risks through shared information on frontier AI capabilities, collaboration on best practices in AI evaluation, and shared research findings, according to the institutes.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed on Monday, the two institutes will examine how frontier AI can be used in cyber attacks or to bolster defense; establish principles to help guide those working to ensure AI behaves as intended; and work closely with key allies to ensure that AI can be harnessed to safely drive growth and improve lives, the institutes said in a press release.

New research from the U.K.’s AI Security Institute underlines the urgency of the work as advanced AI systems are rapidly improving their ability to carry out complex cyber attacks, “in particular—with opportunities for both attackers and defenders,” they said.
