Global Daily Tax News, Taiwan Provides VAT Exemption For Crypto-Assets, (Sep 8, 2026)
Taiwan's Finance Ministry has issued an interpretation order clarifying that the sale of virtual assets and stablecoins are not liable to business tax, the territory's value-added tax.
The position is intended to align the territory's treatment of crypto-assets with international norms.
The Ministry said, following on from the enactment of the Virtual Asset Services Act on July 22, 2026, businesses selling virtual assets and stablecoins as defined in the Act need not levy value-added tax. However, service fees or handling fees charged by virtual asset service providers for providing virtual asset exchange and related services to others, under Article 6 of the Virtual Asset Service Act, are taxable.
Non-fungible tokens are not classified as virtual assets under the law. As such, the sale of NFTs, or their exchange with others for goods or services, is also taxable, the Ministry concluded.
