    Premiums could double in 2026 if Congress allows the enhanced subsidies to expire December 31.

    With the government shutdown in its second month, Congress’ stalemate continues with both sides in a standoff over the expiring enhanced premium subsidies for Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans. Democratic leadership has refused to support a funding bill without an extension to the enhanced premium subsidies. However, Republican leadership insists on reopening the government before negotiating on ACA subsidies. The stakes keep increasing since open enrollment in most states began November 1, with the average premium expected to double due to the enhanced subsidies’ expiration on December 31. The resolution for what Sen. Susan Collins (R-Me) called a “nightmare” shutdown—now the longest ever—and the fate of the expiring enhanced subsidies remain uncertain.
