Slovakia's new Government has indicated that it favors higher taxes on banks, to fund support measures for home owners amid high interest rates.

The Government is aiming to secure parliamentary approval, as well as approval from the European Commission, to sign off the country's Budget before the end of the year.

The Government hopes to finalize the Budget plans this month and secure lawmakers' approval by mid-December.

Prime Minister Robert Fico said: "[...] we are preparing for record bank profits and we want the total taxation of banks in 2024 to be significantly higher than it was until now."
