Global Daily Tax News, Slovakia Again Rejects VAT Registration Threshold Hike, (May 14, 2026)
Slovakia's parliament has rejected proposed amendments to the Value-Added Tax Act to raise the nation's value-added tax registration thresholds.
The legislation would have raised the current thresholds, introduced in Law No. 102/2024 from January 1, 2025, that require taxpayers to be register for value-added tax if their turnover exceeded EUR50,000 in the previous year, or if their turnover in the current year reaches EUR62,500.
The new thresholds under the proposed legislation would have been EUR83,000 and EUR85,000, respectively, and would have been introduced from July 1, 2026.
This is the second instance recently that an increase to the VAT registration thresholds has been rejected by lawmakers. In January 2025, legislation was tabled by opposition lawmakers to raise the VAT registration threshold to EUR75,000.
