Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary privacy, technology, and the law subcommittee, is hopeful that his proposed Location Privacy Protection Act and legislation to update the quarter-century-old Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) will move forward this year.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D., Vt.) “cares about both of these issues,” said Franken. “I have Republican colleagues who care about these issues as well,” he noted during an interview for C-SPAN’s “The Communicators” recorded this week.
“My hope is that we will get to these things,” Franken added. “Chairman Leahy has written a lot of the ECPA laws in the past, and I think and hope we will get to this.”
Franken reiterated much of his argument from a Senate Judiciary hearing on the proposed Comcast Corp. acquisition of Time Warner Cable, Inc., including his criticism of Comcast for trying “to have it both ways” in its previous NBCUniversal transaction and the current transaction with respect to whether TWC is a competitor to Comcast. He also reiterated his criticism of Comcast’s compliance with conditions imposed on the NBCUniversal transaction.
