The list includes eight electric and hybrid models.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the selection of 37 vehicles for its 5-Star Safety Ratings testing for model year 2025. This initiative is part of the agency's New Car Assessment Program, which evaluates vehicles across various crash scenarios to provide consumers with reliable safety information (NHTSA Press Release (Oct. 23, 2024)).
The list of vehicles chosen for testing includes a diverse array of models, with a notable inclusion of eight electric and hybrid vehicles. The selection encompasses a range of body styles, from SUVs to pickups, and includes popular models from leading manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota.
The testing process will assess the vehicles' performance in frontal, side, and rollover crashes. NHTSA has also identified five vehicles that will undergo verification testing for advanced driver assistance systems, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, crash imminent braking, and dynamic brake support.
Sophie Shulman, NHTSA Deputy Administrator, emphasized the agency's commitment to safety, stating, "NHTSA is committed to providing the public with the most reliable and up-to-date safety information so they can choose the vehicle that’s right for them. The 5-Star Safety Ratings program motivates automakers to integrate advanced safety technologies into a wider range of vehicles, helping to save lives and reduce injuries on our nation’s roads.”
The results of the safety ratings, which range from one star (the lowest) to five stars (the highest), will be made available at NHTSA.gov/Ratings and will also be displayed on the window stickers of new cars. This transparency aims to aid consumers in making informed decisions when purchasing a new vehicle.
The initiative aligns with the Department of Transportation's National Roadway Safety Strategy, which is a comprehensive approach to significantly reducing serious injuries and deaths on U.S. highways, roads, and streets.
