A previous recall remedy may prevent the engine from accelerating as intended.
Yamaha Motor Corp., USA (Yamaha) is recalling around 2,462 2016-2021 FJR13 motorcycles because the engine control unit (ECU) programming installed under NHTSA Recall No. 20V813 [see Products Liability Law Daily’s January 21, 2021 analysis], which was designed to prevent gear damage, may prevent the engine from accelerating as intended. A lack of acceleration can increase the risk of a crash (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 21V865, Report receipt date: November 5, 2021).
Remedy. Owners are advised not to ride their motorcycles until they are repaired. Dealers will reprogram the ECU, free of charge. Motorcycles that were previously repaired under recall 20V813 will need to be returned for the new remedy. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 9, 2021.
Contact information. Owners may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926. Yamaha's number for this recall is 990152. Owners also may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
