Cybersecurity Policy Report, New Egyptian Data Protection Law Published in Official Gazette, (Jul 20, 2020)

Resolution No. 151 of 2020, which approves Egypt’s Law on the Protection of Personal Data (LPPD), was published in the country’s Official Gazette on July 15, and is scheduled to take effect three months from the date of publication on Oct. 15.

The LPPD is similar in design to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), with some exceptions. The new law requires controllers and processors to register with the newly-created Personal Data Protection Center if they wish to transfer data outside of Egypt and implements requirements regarding notification of data breaches to the center and specified data subject rights, such as the right to know, the right to access, inspect, and correct, the right of opposition, and the right to be forgotten.

The LPPD also provides for civil fines for violations of its provisions, as well as potential prison sentences for persons processing information without the subject’s consent for personal gain.
